What was life like for them – an odd, secret territory between the civilian and the military? This country house in the Buckinghamshire countryside was home to Britain’s most brilliant mathematical brains, like Alan Turing, and the scene of immense advances in technology – indeed, the birth of modern computing. Bletchley Park was where one of the war’s most famous – and crucial – achievements was made: the cracking of Germany’s “Enigma” code in which its most important military communications were couched. “It is difficult to imagine any act more revolutionary than the redistribution of land from the planters to the slaves in the former Confederacy. Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow “What possible rationale demanded this many debased representations of the recently freed Black people produced in the final third of the nineteenth century? How many ways can one call a woman or a man a "n*****" or a "c***"? How many watermelons does a person have to devour, how many chickens does an individual have to steal, to make the point that Black people are manifestly, by nature, both gluttons and thieves? Why in the world was it necessary to produce tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of these separate and distinct racist images to demean the status of the newly freed slaves in a set of fixed types and motifs, which reached their perverse apex with the characterizations of Black people during Reconstruction in The Birth of a Nation, in the figures of deracinated Black elected officials and, of course, the black male as rapist? The explanation comes in three words: justifying Jim Crow, or, in three different words, disenfranchising Black voters” The first book is Dead Man's Walk which tells the beginnings of the duo's life with the Texas Rangers. These include the funeral industry, expatriate Englishmen in Hollywood, and the popular culture of the 1940s. visit that seems to have confirmed Waugh in his anti-Americanism, The Loved One is generally described as a satire aimed at multiple targets. The book came shortly after his hugely successful novel Brideshead Revisited and not long before his World War II trilogy, Sword of Honor, which some people (myself among them) regard as his finest work. The Loved One is the work of the British novelist Evelyn Waugh, a convert to Catholicism who is widely-and correctly-considered to have been one of the finest writers in English of the 20th century. That is not a bad showing for a book that has something in it to offend just about everyone-a story that lacks any truly attractive characters, features two suicides and a genuinely horrific ending, and carries a profoundly serious message that many readers over the years haven’t gotten. Today the book is still in print and apparently still selling briskly. My copy, a first edition, records four reprintings between June and August. Just 70 years ago this month a slender novel bearing the innocuous title The Loved One made its appearance in the United States. The hugely successful book is still selling briskly after 70 years. The heart of the story is the extraordinary journey Molly, Gracie and Daisy take as they escape Moore River Settlement and make the long walk home across hundreds of kilometres of desert back to their families. To me, Follow the Rabbit-proof Fence is a book about connection to country and family. For Molly, Doris’s mother, this was not the first time she had been to Moore River, and that first visit – and Molly’s subsequent journey home with her younger cousins Gracie and Daisy – will become the heart of Follow the Rabbit-proof Fence. At the age of four she was taken, along with her mother and two-year-old sister, Annabelle, from Jigalong to Moore River Native Settlement. As her birth perhaps foretold, Doris’s life was not going to be easy. She was so small when she was born that she could fit in a shoebox and it was believed that she would not survive. She tells her own story in Under the Wintamarra Tree (2003), of her premature birth, under the tree of the book’s title on Balfour Downs Station, a pastoral lease and cattle station located about 132 kilometres north-east of Newman in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Doris Pilkington Garimara tells the story of her mother in Follow the Rabbit-proof Fence. |
